Who are we?

SANS, or Spay And Neuter Syracuse, is a non-profit clinic devoted to the sterilization of unowned cats and dogs (shelter animals, feral cats) and pets belonging to low-income persons.

The SANS clinic was established as a response to the overwhelming number of unaltered, unwanted animals in the city of Syracuse and surrounding areas. Our goal is to reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs by spaying or neutering and thereby ending the vicious cycle of abuse and neglect.

SANS was founded and supported by the Syracuse-Onondaga Cat Council, several local rescue groups, shelters and many volunteers, with the assistance of the Syracuse Common Council.

How SANS Works

SANS is modeled after the Humane Alliance spay/neuter clinic in Asheville, South Carolina which has successfully reduced the number of unwanted animals by 60% in the 20 counties that they serve, and the Shelter Outreach Services (S.O.S.) clinics in the counties to our south.

Our mission is to provide spay/neuter services for people who could not otherwise afford them. All animals scheduled for surgery will receive a thorough examination by our staff veterinarian. If our veterinarian finds that a pet is not healthy enough to undergo surgery, surgery will be postponed and the animal will be referred to a local veterinarian for specialized care. Each animal will also receive a rabies vaccine, a distemper combo vaccine and will be microchipped. Transportation both to and from the SANS clinic will also be available if needed.

Humane education is part of our mission. SANS provides education to the public about responsible pet care and the importance and advantages of spaying and neutering. In addition, we believe in continued long –term health care and will provide a list of local and referring veterinary clinics and will encourage continued care.
